NightsightThere are several Crown Victorias and Luminas
equipped with the Raytheon Night Observation Devices; the camera is
mounted on the roof and controls and monitor are inside the vehicle. Our
officers have been called upon to use these vehicles by various law
enforcement departments in locating suspects.
NIGHTSIGHT is a thermal imaging system built around an infrared video
camera that measures the thermal energy of an object against its
background. The camera generates a real-time video signal that allows an
operator to view a thermal picture of the scene. The scene is displayed
on a standard RS-170 compatible monitor in black-and-white format. Unlike
some light intensifiers, NIGHTSIGHT is unaffected by the level of ambient
light or rapidly changing light levels. Some typical uses for law
enforcement include:
- Providing enhanced view of patrol areas from the relative safety of
the police car
- Detection of suspects in hiding
- Detection of recently operated vehicles
- Revealing contraband and evidence discarded by suspects fleeing in
the dark
- Detection of items concealed on a suspect's body, in some
situations.
