FATALITY REPORT: DPS REPORTS EIGHT KILLED
ON SOUTH CAROLINA HIGHWAYS DEC. 29 JAN. 1
COLUMBIA The South Carolina Department of Public Safety announces a preliminary number of eight people killed on South Carolina highways from 6 p.m. Friday, December 29, through midnight Monday, January 1.
Four people died when their vehicles left the road, striking a tree. One pedestrian was hit and killed by a vehicle. One person died after his vehicle ran into a creek. Two people died when their vehicles overturned.
As of Jan. 1, 1,057 people had died on South Carolina highways in 2000, compared to 1,064 in 1999. The number of fatalities fell this New Years holiday weekend compared to last year when 13 people died over a similar 78-hour period.
