LANCASTER DMV STILL HAVING COMPUTER PROBLEMS;

CUSTOMERS ENCOURAGED TO VISIT OTHER DMV OFFICES

COLUMBIA – The Division of Motor Vehicles Lancaster field office is only offering limited service due to computer problems. DMV is encouraging customers to visit other DMV offices in the area because Lancaster can only administer driver’s tests and do some dealer work.

In the past two weeks, the Lancaster computers have been in and out of service. The computer that controls the communication has crashed, leaving the Lancaster office unable to communicate with the mainframe at DMV Headquarters in Columbia.

The system, like most DMV branch office systems throughout the state, is nearly 30 years old. DPS has begun the process of upgrading its computer systems throughout the state and plans to have new computer hardware and software installed in DMV offices around the state beginning in May 2000.

"The Department of Public Safety is concentrating all its information technology efforts toward getting these computers repaired as soon as possible so we can serve customers again at this branch," said DPS Director Boykin Rose. "We know this has been inconvenient and frustrating for our customers. We are re-assigning many of our Lancaster staff to neighboring DMV offices to assist until this problem is resolved."

Customers are encouraged to visit one of the following area offices:
