FATALITY REPORT: DPS REPORTS NINE KILLED
ON SOUTH CAROLINA HIGHWAYS MAR. 10-12
COLUMBIA The South Carolina Department of Public Safety announces a preliminary number of nine people killed on South Carolina highways from Friday, March 10, at 6 p.m. until Sunday, March 12, at midnight.
Five people died in single-vehicle collisions and one person died in a two-vehicle collision. Three people died when their vehicle struck a tree after the driver fled from a safety checkpoint in Cheraw. Eight of the nine fatalities were not wearing seat belts and it is unknown whether or not the ninth person was wearing a safety restraint. Eight of the nine fatal collisions occurred on state roads, while the ninth occurred on Interstate-26 in Laurens County. So far this year, 183 people have died on South Carolina highways, compared to 161 at this time last year.
