THREE NEW SPECIAL LICENSE PLATES AVAILABLE AT DMV
COLUMBIA - The South Carolina Department of Public Safety Division of Motor Vehicles has available for sale three new specialized license plates, authorized by state legislation (Senate Bill 150), including Sons of Confederate Veterans, H.L. Hunley submarine and County Veterans Affairs Officers plates.
The Sons of Confederate Veterans was the first organization to meet the requirements of 1999 state law 56-3-8000, which allows non-profit groups to obtain a special license plate after meeting strict requirements. Such groups must meet the definition of Section 501(C)(3) of the Federal Internal Revenue Code to be eligible. Additionally any eligible group must either provide 400 or more, prepaid applications for the special plate, or provide a deposit of $4,000 to cover initial production costs of the plate.
These plates will go on sale in branch and headquarters offices beginning May 26. To purchase one of these plates, a person must complete and sign a nonprofit license plate application form (available at branch office locations), must certify that they are a member of the Sons of Confederate Veterans by providing a membership card or letter from the organization confirming their membership; must provide a copy of their current registration certificate or current license plate number; must provide liability insurance certification; and must pay $30 every two years when they renew their tags in addition to their regular registration fee.
As of May 1, the H.L. Hunley submarine license plate, authorized by 56-3-7910, is available. This plate requires no application. To purchase the plate, a person must provide a copy of their current registration certificate or current license plate number; must provide liability insurance certification; and must pay $100 every two years when they renew their tags in addition to their regular registration fee.
As of May 1, County Veterans Affairs Officers plates, authorized by 56-3-7000, are available. This plate is available to County Veterans Affairs Officers only, and officers may purchase only one tag. The fee is $30 every two years in addition to regular fees. To purchase the plate, customers must provide a copy of their current registration certificate or current license plate number; and must provide liability insurance certification. Applications may be requested at all branch offices and DMV Park Street. Plates are available only at DMV Park Street.
