FATALITY REPORT: DPS REPORTS PRELIMINARY

NUMBER OF FIVE KILLED ON HIGHWAYS DEC. 1-3

COLUMBIA – The South Carolina Department of Public Safety announces a preliminary number of five people killed on South Carolina highways from Friday, Dec. 1, at 6 p.m. until Sunday, Dec. 3, at midnight.

Four of the fatalities were the result of one crash on Interstate 26 where a dump truck ran off the interstate and slammed into a culvert before coming to rest on the bank of a small stream. A fifth person in the truck was airlifted from the crash site. No one in the truck was wearing a seat belt and no other vehicles were involved. The fifth person to die was killed when his car ran off the left side of the road and struck a tree near Wahalla. He also was not wearing a seat belt.

There have been 992 fatalities so far this year, compared to 987 at the same time in 1999.
