FATALITY REPORT: DPS REPORTS TEN KILLED
ON SOUTH CAROLINA HIGHWAYS JULY 27 - 29
COLUMBIA The South Carolina Department of Public Safety announces a preliminary number of ten people killed on South Carolina highways from Friday, July 27, at 6 p.m. until Sunday, July 29, at midnight.
Former Hampton County Sheriff Sidney Lanier Dupree and his wife, Alma Dupree, both 70, died Sunday after the vehicle he was driving collided with a pickup truck along U.S. Highway 17-A in Dorchester County. Dupree, a former South Carolina Highway Patrol trooper, and his wife died at the scene of the 2 p.m. head-on collision. The Duprees were wearing seat belts. In Anderson County two people, one of whom was pregnant, died in another head-on collision Sunday evening. A third head-on collision, this one in Marion County Saturday, claimed the life of one person.
As of July 30, 539 people had died on South Carolina highways, compared to 631 last year at this time.
