FATALITY REPORT: DPS REPORTS 10 KILLED
ON SOUTH CAROLINA HIGHWAYS AUGUST 24 - 26
COLUMBIA The South Carolina Department of Public Safety announces a preliminary number of 10 people killed on South Carolina highways from Friday, August 24, at 6 p.m. until Sunday, August 26, at midnight.
One motorcyclist, who was not wearing a helmet, died when his motorcycle ran off the road and struck a tree. One person died when the vehicle he was driving crossed the centerline and struck another vehicle almost head-on. Eight others died in seven separate single-vehicle collisions. In each of these collisions, the vehicles involved ran off the road and struck a tree or a utility pole or overturned. Only three of those killed were wearing a seat belt.
As of August 26, 628 people had died on South Carolina highways, compared to 703 last year at this time.
