FATALITY REPORT: DPS REPORTS 12 KILLED

ON SOUTH CAROLINA HIGHWAYS AUGUST 31 – SEPTEMBER 3

COLUMBIA – The South Carolina Department of Public Safety announces a preliminary number of 12 people killed on South Carolina highways from Friday, August 31, at 6 p.m. until Monday, September 3, at midnight.

Five pedestrians were struck and killed by vehicles over the Labor Day holiday period. One pedestrian died when he ran into the roadway to rescue his dog that had been hit and killed by another vehicle. One motorcyclist died when he lost control of his bike and ran off the road. And one bicyclist was killed when his bike collided with a vehicle in Saluda County. Of the five people who died in collisions, only one was wearing a seat belt.

As of September 3, 658 people had died on South Carolina highways, compared to 716 last year at this time.
