HODGES ANNOUNCES GRANTS TO ASSIST JUVENILE JUSTICE AND DELINQUENCY PREVENTION PROGRAMS STATEWIDE
COLUMBIA Gov. Jim Hodges will announce the award of seven grants to local governments, state agencies and private nonprofit organizations statewide to help counter the growing problem of misconduct and crime by children.
"These programs are not only evidence of South Carolinas commitment to its youth, but also evidence of our commitment to future generations of South Carolina citizens," Hodges said.
These grants will support efforts to provide community alternatives to the secure confinement of truants, runaways and incorrigible youth. The South Carolina Department of Public Safetys (DPS) Office of Justice Programs will administer the grants on behalf of the Governors Office.
The Governors Juvenile Justice Advisory Council played an instrumental role in the decision to fund these grants. The Advisory Council consists of state and local officials as well as private citizens. One of the Councils chief responsibilities is to recommend ways to improve juvenile justice services in South Carolina. These grants represent awards totaling $732,748 from the U.S. Department of Justice, Office of Juvenile Justice and Delinquency Prevention. The following received grants:
| University of South Carolina: Disproportionate Minority Confinement (DMC) Project |
