FATALITY REPORT: DPS REPORTS SEVEN KILLED

ON SOUTH CAROLINA HIGHWAYS NOVEMBER 9 - 11

COLUMBIA – The South Carolina Department of Public Safety announces a preliminary number of seven people killed on South Carolina highways from Friday, November 9, at 6 p.m. until Sunday, November 11, at midnight.

Two pedestrians were struck and killed in separate collisions, one of which was a hit-and-run. Four people died in separate single-vehicle collisions. In each collision, the driver lost control of the vehicle then overturned and/or struck trees. Speed was a factor in three of those collisions. Another person was killed when she stopped her vehicle on I-26 in Spartanburg County to try to assist a dog in the roadway. Her vehicle was struck in the rear by a vehicle that had swerved to avoid hitting the dog. Both vehicles burst into flames. Only one of the motor vehicle occupants killed this weekend was wearing a seat belt.

As of November 12, 868 people had died on South Carolina highways, compared to 941 last year at this time.
