FATALITY REPORT: DPS REPORTS FIVE KILLED

ON SOUTH CAROLINA HIGHWAYS DECEMBER 14-16

COLUMBIA – The South Carolina Department of Public Safety announces a preliminary number of five people killed on South Carolina highways from Friday, December 14, at 6 p.m. until Sunday, December 16, at midnight.

These numbers do not include a 13-year-old Grey Court girl who died in a cow pasture after being thrown from a Honda four-wheeler. She was not wearing a helmet and died after the four-wheeler landed on top of her. Since the fatal collision occurred on private property it is not listed as a highway fatality.

One unidentified pedestrian was struck and killed in the early morning hours of December 16 while walking in the middle of a roadway in Chesterfield County. The four others, who died as a result of traffic collisions over the weekend, were not wearing a seatbelt. Two of those were ejected from the vehicles in which they were riding.

As of December 16, 990 people had died on South Carolina highways, compared to 1,022 last year at this time.
