PROGRAMS STATEWIDE
COLUMBIA- The South Carolina Department of Public Safety announced today that Gov. Jim Hodges awarded grants to local governments, state agencies and private nonprofit organizations statewide to help decrease traffic-related crashes, injuries, and fatalities.
These grants will support state and community efforts to help prevent traffic crashes by implementing a variety of enforcement and educational programs. The program will be administered by the Office of Highway Safety of the South Carolina Department of Public Safety on behalf of the Governor’s Office.
“One of the leading causes of death and injury for South Carolinians is traffic crashes,” Hodges said. “These grant awards will play a vital role in helping make our roadways a safer place for our family members and will help prevent the needless pain and suffering often caused by traffic crashes.”
The grants will be used for programs based on the following national and state-identified priority areas: alcohol countermeasures, occupant protection, police traffic services, traffic records, youth alcohol/youth traffic safety programs, safe communities, rail-grade crossing safety and roadway safety. The programs will provide traffic safety education to the driving population as well as increase traffic enforcement efforts throughout the state.
The grant funds are awarded to the state by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration based on a formula that includes the state population and roadway mileage. The following received grants:
