COLUMBIA -- The South Carolina Department of Public Safety announces a preliminary number of three people killed on South Carolina highways from Friday, March 14, at 6 p.m. until Sunday, March 16, at midnight.
The driver of a truck was killed after swerving left of center and striking an 18-wheeler. A woman was killed when the vehicle in which she was riding struck a deer, causing the deer to come through the windshield, killing the passenger. An 18-wheeler clipped the back of a boat, which was being pulled by a sport utility vehicle. The impact caused the truck to swerve into the median striking several trees and flipping, killing the passenger.
As of March 17, 2003, 132 people had died on South Carolina highways, compared to 188 last year. Of the 110 motor vehicle occupants who have died in 2003, 70 were not wearing seat belts.
