COLUMBIA -- The South Carolina Department of Public Safety announces a preliminary number of three people killed on South Carolina highways from Friday, March 21, at 6 p.m. until Sunday, March 23, at midnight.
One person died early Saturday morning when the van in which he was riding ran off the road, overturned and caught fire in Spartanburg County. A motorcyclist died Saturday morning when he disregarded a traffic signal and collided with another vehicle in Aiken County. Another person died Saturday afternoon when she failed to yield the right of way and collided with another vehicle in Horry County.
As of March 24, 145 people had died on South Carolina highways, compared to 203 last year at this time. Of the 122 motor vehicle occupants who have died in 2003, 82 were not wearing seat belts.
