COLUMBIA - The South Carolina Department of Public Safety announces that a man has been charged with driving under the influence and malicious damage to real property after crashing his vehicle into the metal door securing the Pendleton and Main Street entrance to the underground parking garage at the Statehouse Complex.
Richard B. Brabham Jr., 21, Bishopville, S.C., was driving north on South Main Street about 4 a.m. today when he ran his Mitsubishi Galant into the large metal door. His vehicle came to rest about 10 feet inside the garage.
A Bureau of Protective Services officer heard what sounded like a loud explosion coming from the garage and went to inspect it. After talking with the suspect, BPS Officer Larry Walker noticed the victim had slurred speech, appeared incoherent and smelled of alcohol.
Brabham was treated by EMS at the scene for some slight cuts on his face. The Bureau of Protective Services placed him under arrest and later took him to Palmetto Richland Hospital.
He was released from the hospital around 9:15 a.m. and taken to the Richland County Detention Center by BPS. He is to appear in traffic court on May 9. The incident remains under investigation by BPS.
