COLUMBIA -- The South Carolina Department of Public Safety announces a preliminary number of six people killed on South Carolina highways from Friday, July 25, at 6 p.m. until Sunday, July 27, at midnight.
One man was killed when his vehicle sideswiped another. A woman was killed in the Upstate when a dog ran into her path causing her to lose control of her motorcycle. A pedestrian was killed in Horry County when she stepped into the path of a vehicle on U.S. 17. A Florence man was killed on I-95 when his vehicle ran into a ditch and overturned. A Dorchester woman was killed on Ashley Phosphate Road after striking another vehicle. A Colleton County man was killed after his vehicle was struck from behind, pushing it into oncoming traffic where it was struck by another vehicle.
As of July 27, 2003, 502 people had died on South Carolina highways, compared to 604 last year at this time. Of the 396 motor vehicle occupants who have died in 2003, 278 were not wearing seat belts.
