FATALITY REPORT: DPS REPORTS FOUR KILLED 

ON SOUTH CAROLINA HIGHWAYS AUG. 1-3

 

COLUMBIA -- The South Carolina Department of Public Safety announces a preliminary number of four people killed on South Carolina highways from Friday, Aug. 1, at 6 p.m. until Sunday, Aug. 3, at midnight.

 

A 6-year-old girl was ejected from a vehicle and died on I-95 in Hampton County when the vehicle’s tire blew out, causing the driver to lose control and overturn five times. Two motorcyclists died in separate collisions when vehicles pulled into their paths. A pedestrian was struck and killed in Florence.

 

As of August 3, 2003, 519 people had died on South Carolina highways, compared to 623 last year. Of the 407 motor vehicle occupants who died in 2003, 281 were not wearing seat belts.
