COLUMBIA -- The South Carolina Department of Public Safety announces a preliminary number of eight people killed on South Carolina highways from Friday, Aug. 15, at 6 p.m. until Sunday, Aug. 17, at midnight.
One pedestrian was struck and killed as he tried to cross the road Saturday night in Sumter County. One person died in a head-on collision Friday evening in Pickens County and two people died in a head-on collision Sunday night in Greenville County. Four other people died in single-vehicle collisions in Darlington County, Chesterfield County, Charleston County and Florence County over the weekend. None of the seven motor vehicle occupants who died was wearing a seat belt.
As of August 17, 2003, 546 people had died on South Carolina highways, compared to 658 last year. Of the 425 motor vehicle occupants who have died in 2003, 297 were not wearing seat belts.
