COLUMBIA - The South Carolina Department of Public Safety announces the following event:

Who:        The South Carolina Department of Public Safety (SCDPS)

What:       Highway Fatality Victims Memorial Service. The purpose of this service is to remember the about 1,090 people who lost their lives on South Carolina highways last year, to bring together the families and to educate the public in an effort to prevent future loss of life on our highways.

Scheduled speakers are

James K. Schweitzer, director of SCDPS

The Rev. Dr. Dick Lincoln, pastor of Shandon Baptist Church

Members of the Families of Highway Fatalities group, including a couple who lost their 18-year-old son last year and a Union man who lost his 6-year-old child.

The Wall of Remembrance also will be on display.

When:       10 a.m. Saturday, April 22

Where:      Shandon Baptist Church, 5250 Forest Drive in Columbia. The church is located less than a mile from the main gate at Fort Jackson.
