COLUMBIA -- The South Carolina Department of Public Safety announces a preliminary number of 18 people killed on South Carolina highways from Friday, August 18, at 6 p.m. until Sunday, August 20, at midnight.
As of August 20, 2006, 621 people died on South Carolina highways, compared to 709 in 2005. Of the 466 motor vehicle occupants who died in 2006, 303 were not wearing seat belts. These are preliminary numbers and are subject to change.
