MADD TO “TIE ONE ON FOR SAFETY” This Holiday Season
Holiday Campaign Asks Motorists to Pledge to Drive Safe and Sober
What: Please join us at the Mothers Against Drunk Driving (MADD) press conference to kick-off the 20th Annual Tie One On For Safety holiday red ribbon campaign. This year’s event is sponsored by the South Carolina Department of Public Safety. Speakers include Jami Goldman, MADD SC State Executive Director, James Schweitzer, Director of the SC Department of Public Safety, MADD volunteers and victims of drunk driving crashes.
Red Ribbons are distributed throughout the state to car dealers, schools, businesses and individuals to promote the campaign and to encourage motorists to tie a MADD ribbon onto a visible location on their vehicles as a pledge to drive safe and sober, to wear seat belts and encourage others to do the same.
MADD’s signature red ribbons will be handed out to remind motorists to drive safe and sober especially during the holiday season.
When: Friday, November 17, 2006
10:00 – 11:00 AM
Where: South Carolina State House (north side steps)
1100 Gervais Street
Columbia, SC
Why: The holidays are among the deadliest times on the road. There are nearly 13,000 drunk driving deaths annually. Another half a million are injured each year in alcohol-related traffic crashes. In South Carolina there were 359 drunk driving fatalities in 2005. Seventy seven people died in drunk driving crashes and/or were unbelted during Thanksgiving through New Year’s in 2004. MADD need the public’s commitment to drive safe, sober and buckled up in order to save lives and prevent needless injuries due to drunk driving.
