FATALITY REPORT: DPS REPORTS TWENTY-ONE KILLED 

ON SOUTH CAROLINA HIGHWAYS, NOV. 30-DEC. 2, 2007

           

COLUMBIA -- The South Carolina Department of Public Safety announces a preliminary number of 21 people killed on South Carolina highways from Friday, November 30, at 6 p.m. until Sunday, December 2, at midnight.

 

The 21 highway deaths this past weekend is the highest number of fatalities for any weekend in the last three years. This includes holiday weekends that normally have longer time frames. The previous high for a non-holiday weekend in recent years was 18 fatalities over the weekend of August 18-20, 2006. During the Memorial Day, 2007 holiday period sixteen (16) people died on South Carolina roads.

 

As of December 2, 2007, 987 people died on South Carolina highways, compared to 974 in 2006. Of the 744 motor vehicle occupants who died in 2007, 464 were not wearing seat belts. Through midnight December 2, 2007, 116 motorcyclists, 95 pedestrians and 16 bicyclists have died on state roads and highways. These are preliminary numbers and are subject to change.
