COLUMBIA -- The South Carolina Department of Public Safety announces a preliminary number of 14 people killed on South Carolina highways from Friday, December 7, at 6 p.m. until Sunday, December 9, at midnight.
As of December 9, 2007, 1,007 people died on South Carolina highways, compared to 993 in 2006. Of the 759 motor vehicle occupants who died in 2007, 476 were not wearing seat belts. Through midnight December 9, 2007, 119 motorcyclists, 96 pedestrians and 17 bicyclists have died on state roads and highways. These are preliminary numbers and are subject to change.
