COLUMBIA -- The South Carolina Department of Public Safety announces a preliminary number of eight people killed on South Carolina highways from Friday, December 14, at 6 p.m. until Sunday, December 16, at midnight.
As of December 16, 2007, 1,030 people have died on South Carolina highways, compared to 993 in 2006. Of the 777 motor vehicle occupants who died in 2007, 483 were not wearing seat belts. Through midnight December 16, 2007, 119 motorcyclists, 101 pedestrians and 18 bicyclists have died on state roads and highways. These are preliminary numbers and are subject to change.
