COLUMBIA -- The South Carolina Department of Public Safety announces a preliminary number of seven people killed on South Carolina highways from Friday, December 21, at 6 p.m. until Tuesday, December 25, at midnight.
The official 102-hour holiday travel period began at 6 p.m., Friday December 21 and extended through Tuesday December 25 at midnight. Last year, five people were killed over a shorter 78-hour travel period.
As of December 26, 2007, 1,056 people have died on South Carolina highways, compared to 1,033 in 2006. Of the 798 motor vehicle occupants who died in 2007, 496 were not wearing seat belts. Through midnight December 26, 2007, 120 motorcyclists, 104 pedestrians and 18 bicyclists have died on state roads and highways. These are preliminary numbers and are subject to change.
