FATALITY REPORT: DPS REPORTS TWELVE KILLED 

ON SOUTH CAROLINA HIGHWAYS DURING NEW YEAR’S EVE HOLIDAY PERIOD

           

COLUMBIA -- The South Carolina Department of Public Safety announces a preliminary number of twelve people killed on South Carolina highways from Friday, December 28, 2007 at 6 p.m. until Tuesday, January 1, 2008 at midnight, during the 108-hour New Year’s Holiday time period.

 

As of December 31, 2007, 1,071 people have died on South Carolina highways, compared to 1,044 in 2006. Of the 808 motor vehicle occupants who died in 2007, 501 were not wearing seat belts. Through midnight December 31, 2007, 120 motorcyclists, 106 pedestrians and 19 bicyclists have died on state roads and highways. These are preliminary numbers and are subject to change.
