HIGHWAY PATROL TROOPER J.D. HAYNES

KILLED IN LINE-OF-DUTY TRAFFIC COLLISION TODAY

COLUMBIA - The South Carolina Department of Public Safety regretfully announces that Lance Corporal James D. Haynes, 38, died in a motor vehicle collision around 3:30 a.m. Friday. Haynes was on duty in Orangeburg County and killed in a traffic collision on Highway 33 near I-26. Haynes was responding to another traffic collision at the time of his death.

The Orangeburg Department of Public Safety, Orangeburg County Sheriff’s Office and the Lexington County Sheriff’s Office are investigating.

“The entire department and law enforcement community mourns the sudden loss of Trooper Haynes,” said SCDPS Director James K. Schweitzer. “Our deepest condolences are extended to his family and friends.”

Haynes graduated from Highway Patrol Training School in 1997 and had been assigned to Troop Seven, which includes Orangeburg, Calhoun, Barnwell, Bamberg, Allendale, Aiken and Hampton counties.

Haynes was married with two children and resided in Richland County. He was assigned to Troop Seven, Post B, which includes Orangeburg and Calhoun counties.

Haynes is a 1987 graduate of Keenan High School and graduated in 1991 from Livingstone College.

“We are shocked and deeply saddened by the tragic news we received this morning of Trooper Haynes’ death,” said Highway Patrol Col. Russell F. Roark, III. “Even though we all know that the job of a law enforcement officer is dangerous, we are never prepared for such a loss.”

Trooper Haynes’ fellow troopers remember him as deeply dedicated to his family and to the Highway Patrol. He often received commendations from the public for his selfless service in the performance of his duties.

The last trooper to die in the line-of-duty was J.W. Parker in 2005. Parker was killed in Sumter County.

Further information on memorial service plans will be released by the Highway Patrol at the wishes of the family.
