FATALITY REPORT: DPS REPORTS FIVE KILLED

ON SOUTH CAROLINA HIGHWAYS, MAY 2-4, 2008

COLUMBIA -- The South Carolina Department of Public Safety announces a preliminary number of nine people being killed on South Carolina highways from Friday, May 2, at 6 p.m. until Sunday, May 4, at midnight.

As of May 4, 2008, 311 people have died on South Carolina highways, compared to 333 in 2007. Of the 236 motor vehicle occupants who died in 2008, 167 were not wearing seat belts. Through midnight May 4, 2008, 32 motorcyclists, four bicyclists and 31 pedestrians have died on state roads and highways. These are preliminary numbers and are subject to change.
