COLUMBIA -- The South Carolina Department of Public Safety
announces a preliminary number of three people being killed on South Carolina
highways from Friday, May 15 at 6 p.m. until Sunday, May 17, at midnight.
As of May 17, 2009, 312 people have died on South Carolina
highways, compared to 369 highway deaths in 2008. Of the 247 motor vehicle
occupants who have died in 2009, 151 were not wearing seat belts. There are 15
fatal collisions in which it isn’t known if the person who died was wearing a
seat belt.
Through midnight May 17, 28 pedestrians, 30 motorcyclists
and one bicyclist have died on state roads and highways. The remaining
fatalities are the result of collisions involving an assortment of non-motorized
vehicles.
