COLUMBIA -- The South Carolina Department of Public Safety
announces a preliminary number of five people killed on South Carolina highways
during the 78-hour Memorial Day holiday weekend, which ran from Friday, May 22,
at 6 p.m. until Monday, May 25, at midnight. Ten people died during the Memorial
Day weekend in 2008. In 2007, a total of 20 people died during the same time
period.
As of May 25, 325 people had died on South Carolina
highways, compared to 397 last year at this time. Of the 250 motor vehicle
occupants who have died in 2009, 151 were not wearing seat belts. There have
been 15 fatal collisions in which it isn’t known if the persons who died were
wearing seat belts. Through midnight May 25, 34 motorcyclists, 32 pedestrians
and two bicyclists have died in collisions on South Carolina roads and highways.
The remaining fatalities are the result of collisions involving an assortment of
non-motorized vehicles.
