COLUMBIA -- The South Carolina Department of Public Safety
announces a preliminary number of six people being killed on South Carolina
highways from Friday, June 12 at 6 p.m. until Sunday, June 14, at midnight.
As of midnight June 14, 2009, 391 people have died on South
Carolina highways, compared to 452 highway deaths in 2008. Of the 298 motor
vehicle occupants who have died in 2009, 175 were not wearing seat belts. There
have been 18 fatal collisions in which it isn’t known if the person who died was
wearing a seat belt.
Through midnight June 14, 38 pedestrians, 43 motorcyclists
and four bicyclists have died on state roads and highways. The remaining
fatalities are the result of collisions involving an assortment of non-motorized
vehicles.
