COLUMBIA -- The South Carolina Department of Public Safety
announces a preliminary number of 13 people being killed on South Carolina
highways from Friday, July 10 at 6 p.m. until Sunday, July 12, at midnight.
As of midnight July 12, 2009, 465 people have died on South
Carolina highways, compared to 508 highway deaths in 2008.
Of the 353 motor vehicle occupants who have died in 2009,
214 were not wearing seat belts. There have been 18 fatal collisions where the
use of seat belts is unknown.
Through midnight July 12, 47 pedestrians, 49 motorcyclists
and six bicyclists have died on state roads and highways. The remaining
fatalities are the result of collisions involving an assortment of non-motorized
vehicles.
