FATALITY REPORT: DPS REPORTS NINE KILLED

ON SOUTH CAROLINA HIGHWAYS, OCTOBER 16-18, 2009

COLUMBIA -- The South Carolina Department of Public Safety announces a preliminary number of nine people being killed on South Carolina highways from Friday, October 16 at 6 p.m. until Sunday, October 18, at midnight.

As of October 18, 713 people have died on South Carolina highways, compared to 746 highway deaths in this same time period in 2008.

Of the 541 motor vehicle occupants who have died in 2009, 318 were not wearing seat belts. There have been 28 fatal collisions where the use of seat belts is unknown.

Through midnight October 18, 69 pedestrians, 77 motorcyclists and 10 bicyclists have died on state roads and highways. The remaining fatalities are the result of collisions involving an assortment of vehicles such as mopeds or tractors.
