Carolina Department of Public Safety
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
January 3, 2012
Contact: Sid Gaulden,
In
2011, during a New Year’s holiday time frame of 78 hours, 10 people died on
As of December 31, 2011, 813 people died on
So far this year, January 1 through midnight
January 2, four people have been killed on state roads and highways as opposed
to eight highway fatalities at this same time in 2011.
These numbers are preliminary in nature because
persons injured in collisions in December and who subsequently succumb to those
injuries within 30 days of the dates of the collisions, would be counted as
fatalities in 2011.
Another factor is the delay in receipt of fatality
reports, which means that some reports may not be received until after January
1, 2012.
Of the 561 motor vehicle occupants who died in
2011, 271 were not wearing seat belts. A year ago, at this date, 315 of the 598
motor vehicle occupants killed in collisions were not wearing seatbelts.
Through midnight December 31, 2011, 111
pedestrians, 102 motorcyclists and 13 bicyclists have died on state roads and
highways. In 2010, 90 pedestrians, 82 motorcyclists and fourteen bicyclists
died on SC roads.
These also are preliminary numbers and are subject
to change.
